Thailand school shooting: Teen kills 8 including grandparents

A 14-year-old left eight dead, including his grandparents and himself, in a Thai school shooting. It is the second school shooting in the country this year.

A 14-year-old student in Thailand is suspected of fatally shooting his grandparents and then carrying out a massacre at his school on Friday, killing three teachers and three students before turning the gun on himself, according to police. The attack in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi province, on the outskirts of Bangkok, left eight people dead in total, including the suspect.

Attack began at grandparents' home

Police said the teenage suspect first used his grandfather's handgun to shoot his grandparents dead at their residence. He then made his way to Debsirin Nonthaburi School, where he was a ninth-grade student typically around 14 years old, and opened fire. Lt. Col. Dechrapee Kongdee, the Nonthaburi provincial police commander, confirmed that the suspected gunman had taken his own life after the rampage.

In a police statement, authorities said the suspect fired 26 rounds during the attack, and an additional 34 rounds of ammunition were found at the scene. The sequence of events points to a deliberately planned act, though investigators have not yet offered a motive for the violence.

Shock and unanswered questions

The attack has sent shockwaves through the close-knit school community and the wider country, leaving many grappling with how such a tragedy could unfold. Police have not publicly identified the suspect or the victims, and questions remain about what may have driven a teenager to such extreme violence. The incident is likely to prompt scrutiny of how the grandfather's handgun was accessible and whether any warning signs were missed.

Second school shooting in Thailand this year

Friday's tragedy marks the second school shooting in Thailand in 2025. In February, a teacher was killed and a student injured in a shooting at a school in the south of the country. That earlier incident had already raised concerns about gun violence in educational settings, and today's events will amplify those worries. Thailand has historically seen periodic mass shootings, but attacks directly targeting schools remain rare, making this latest case particularly alarming.

Authorities to investigate and respond

In the aftermath, a full investigation is underway. Officers are expected to examine the origin of the weapon, the suspect's background, and the events that led up to the shooting. The case also renews attention on the need for stronger gun control measures, better mental health support for youth, and improved security in Thai schools. As the investigation continues, the community must come to terms with the loss of teachers and students in what should have been a safe environment for learning.
