The application for Nigerian ePassport (Ecowas Passport) can be done online through The Nigeria Immigration Service website for all Nigerian citizens. The Nigerian ePassport allows you to enter all member countries in the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) region without applying for an entry visa. There are fifteen member countries in ECOWAS  which includes Benin, Burkina Faso (then known as Upper Volta), Cote d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

Kindly read the guidelines below to guide you through the application process.

If making an application for yourself or on behalf of someone else; make sure you have the correct contact information, permanent address (where the passport will be delivered to after processing), Next of kin name, contact information and address; and Passport processing location.

Also have your credit card available for payment of application fees before you begin your application because the application fees are paid online after filling all the required parts of the form. The payment of the application fee is valid for one (1) year from the date of payment and is non-refundable except the payment was made twice for the same application by mistake.

There are two passport booklet types which is the 32 pages and 64 pages. If you are frequent traveler and feel the 32 pages would not be enough before the date of expiry which is 5years from the date of issuance of your passport, then you can choose the 64 pages passport booklet type.

As at the day of publication of this article (December 29, 2015), the application fee for 32 pages Standard ePassport is N17,000, while 64 pages Standard ePassport is N22,000.

To start your application, you have to visit The Nigeria Immigration Service website HERE.

There are two types of ePassport which you will be asked to choose from, namely: Standard ePassport and Official ePassport. The Standard ePassport is the general passport every Nigerian is eligible to apply for. The Official E-Passport is ONLY for Government Officials travelling abroad.

Kindly select Standard ePassport if you are NOT a Government official.

After choosing your passport type, you will be asked to choose the processing country, which is where you reside. Click on ‘Start Application’.

The next step will take you to a form where you have to fill in your general and contact information. All questions with red asterisks are compulsory.

Kindly make sure all information given is accurate.

After filling all compulsory fields on the application form, check the ‘I ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS FORM’ check box then click the “PRINT” Button to print filled form. After submitting your application, you will be given an Application ID and Reference number.

Click on “Proceed to Online Payment”, Click to select Payment Currency “Pay in Naira” or “Pay in Dollars” option then Click on ‘Continue’ button.

Choose the currency you want to use for payment (Naira or US Dollars): If you selected option to pay in Naira, you will be prompted to select PayType (payment method): “Bank”, “Credit OR Debit card”,

If you intend to pay at a bank, selected “Bank” and click continue. View the list of participating banks and then click on ‘Continue’.

  • The “Print Acknowledgment” button will help you print “Payment Acknowledgment Slip” with Transaction ID, Application ID & Reference Number.
  • With the copy of your Payment acknowledgement slip, proceed to a participating bank for payment.
  • On making payment at the bank, you MUST be issued with an ‘approved payment platform provider’ receipt that contains a “Validation Number”. You will need the “Validation Number” for confirmation of payment on the portal. (For use of your Validation Number, see the section on Validation Number below)

If you intend to pay through Credit/Debit card, select “Credit/Debit card” and click continue, you will be required to fill in your log-in credentials.

  • After filling in, click “Login” button and you will be sent to the payment portal, for preceding with the payment click the “PAY” button. Payment portal display application details, click on “Continue” button.
  • You will be prompted to “Value Card” payment page, provide information of your card & Click on “OK” button. After payment, the “Validation Number” is generated. Store it and use it to confirm the payment. You can also print a receipt by clicking the “Print the Receipt” button.
  • If you have already completed an application, please check your application status rather than completing a duplicate application. Your address will be verified for processing and delivery. Before completing application, please ensure that you pay the verification & delivery fee and ensure your address is correct.

General Documents required for interview:

Standard Passport

  1. Local Government letter of identification.
  2. Birth certificate / age declaration.
  3. 2 recent colour passport photographs
  4. Guarantor’s form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate /  High Court Judge
  5. Parents’ letter of consent for minors under 16 years
  6. Marriage certificate where applicable
  7. Police report incase of lost passport
  8. Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission

Official Passport

  1. Letter of introduction from appropriate State Government, Federal Government Ministry / Organization.
  2. Marriage certificate where applicable
  3. Police report in case of lost passport
  4. Letter of appointment / last promotion .
  5. Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission

Please Note:

  • Acknowledgment slip & payment receipt plus 2 recent photographs are applicable in all cases to the selected passport office for processing.
  • Print out copy of duly completed application form
  • Take printed and signed application forms to Passport office / Embassy / High Commission for further processing
  • A guarantor must attach the following documents: Photocopy of Data page of Nigerian standard Passport; Driving License or National Identity Card
